Center Information

Name of Center:
Yawkey Club of Roxbury
About Our Center:

"Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston's Yawkey Club of Roxbury, formerly the Roxbury Club, re-opened in September 2006 following an $8 million renovation and expansion. Our Club’s transformation includes an expanded teen center, teen education center, fitness center, climbing wall in the gym, a performing arts center, new Computer Clubhouse with a music room, commercial kitchen, first aid room, School Age Child Care, a new room for ages 6-7, a social recreation room for ages 6-12, and a new conference room. Our facility has an elevator for accessibility, new windows and a lift in the pool, and central air conditioning and heating to help ensure our members’ comfort and safety. Since 1910, the Club’s mission has remained the same – to help boys and girls become successful citizens and leaders. To that end, we continue a legacy of dedicated and committed staff, quality programming and investment in our facility." The Timothy Smith Centers at the Yawkey Club of Roxbury are dedicated to providing a creative and safe after school learning environment where young people work with the Yawkey Club technology staff, volunteers and mentors to explore their own ideas, develop skills, and build confidence in themselves through the use of technology. Members are exposed to professional grade hardware and software including digital video cameras, microscopes, graphical and animation software applications and high speed internet access. Technology related field trips include visits to The Computer Museum at the Museum of Science, The MIT Media Laboratory, Microsoft and The Boston Stock Exchange. Technology Teams are Yawkey teen members who show a special, committed interest in obtaining and utilizing professional grade technology skills through workshops and project development with the BGCB technology staff. The CyberSummit is BGCB’s annual teen technology conference held during April school vacation week that includes hands-on workshops in cutting-edge technology, as well as team building opportunities in the form of “technical challenges.” Workshops and challenges range from creating digital music, to building 3D scale models, and filming and editing an original video. Participants leave CyberSummit empowered to utilize technology in a more meaningful and personal way.
